Abstract

733,656. Extruding ice-cream &c. MIDLAND COUNTIES DAIRY, Ltd. Dec. 3, 1953 [Dec. 3, 1952], No. 30603/52. Class 87 (2). Apparatus for extruding comestibles which are in the partly solidified or plastic state during production, e.g. ice-cream and margarine, comprises a chamber 15, Fig. 5, having an inlet opening 16 for the supply of ice-cream thereto and two outlets 17. A member 20 for dividing the incoming ice-cream into two streams comprises a flat circular disc which may be moved across the opening, to regulate the distribution of icecream to the outlets, by turning a wing nut 22 on a screw-threaded rod 21 fixed to the disc. The two outlets may each deliver a stream of ice-cream onto conveyer plates 12, but as shown they feed into secondary chambers 23 each having two outlets 24 and each having a. control member 20 as in chamber 15. The chambers 15, 24 have end caps 18 held in place by springs 19. The four streams of ice-cream issuing from outlets 24 are cut into portions 54 by a cutter in the form of a tube 46, Fig. 1, through which hot water is passed, the cutter being reciprocated vertically by a cam 44 through the intermediary of a bar 45 (fulcrummed at 9, Fig. 3), crossbar 47 and links 6. The cam 44 is fixed on a shaft 39 carrying chain wheels 40 around which pass chains 11 which carry the conveyer plates 12. The chambers 15 and 24 and their appurtenances are carried by a frame 25 supported at its ends in slots in a pair of levers 27 pivoted at 27a, and the frame 25 is reciprocated lengthwise of the conveyer to separate the extruding streams from the cut portions. The frame is reciprocated by a cam 38 acting through rod 35 and crossbar 34, and the shape of this cam is such as to produce a gradual advance of the frame towards the cutting position and then, after cutting, a sharp retraction. In a modified arrangement (not illustrated) only two streams of ice-cream are extruded and the cut portions 54 lie with their length across the conveyer plates. Into such crosswise-lying por- . tions may be inserted sticks 57 fed by a slide 58 moved by a cam 61.
