Abstract
733,161. Wrapping articles. CHAMBERS, B. W. Nov. 26, 1952 [Feb. 22, 1952], No. 4743/52. Class 94 (1). [Also in Group XI] Apples &c. are pressed by hand against a wrapping material 2, softened by a heater 22 as it is cyclically and automatically drawn over an opening 4 whereby the material stretches and allows the apple and material to pass through the opening 4. The apple is then twisted by hand to seal the material at the neck where it is then severed by advance of the heater element 22. The sheet 2 of material is drawn over a baize covered table 2 across the opening 4 therein by co-operating rollers 6, 7, the roller 7 being timed to be moved away from the baize covered roller 6 by cams 6 to stop the feed when the apple is to be pressed down. The rollers 6, 7 pass the apertured film to waste. The electric heater 22 on a lever 20 is urged in underneath the film over the opening 4 by a spring 23, a cam actuated chain 24 permitting the swing and a further swing to allow the heater to advance further to sever the neck. A cam operated clamp 17 presses on the surround of the film over the opening 4 to hold it when the apple is to be passed through. A small metal roller 34 may be interposed in the feed of the sheet material, to which the cut out film may adhere, and so prevent contraction on passing to the roller 6. The heating current is regulated by an automatic switch 32, Fig. 6 (not shown). A hand lever 37 allows the heater 22 to be held away from the opening 4 during adjustment of the sheet.
