Abstract

357,203. Affixing sheet material by adhesives. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) May 20, 1930, No. 15507. [Class 73.] In machines for applying sections of covering material to a continuously fed strip of wrapping material, a knife cuts transversely across the strip and is movable in an orbital path in a plane which crosses the strip in an inclined position to the strip, causing the knife to move with the strip while cutting the same, and a ledger plate moves forwardly with the knife and the strip. In a cork tipping machine for making cigarettes, a cork strip C is fed through adjustably-mounted guide plates 48 to rollers 27, 28, guide brackets 50, and a ledger plate 47. The ledger plate is carried by an arm 46 attached to a slide 44 carrying rollers 40, 41 reciprocated by a cam disc 39 on a knife shaft 17, which is inclined to the horizontal plane. To clamp and release the knife, a knife disc 32 supports fingers 35 shaped like bell-crank levers, which clamp a knifeblade 36 to the disc 32 with one arm and with the other arm engage a recess of the clamp bushing 37. The paper strip P is guided through an adjustable plate 95 to rollers 77, 79 the former having projections 78 spaced at lengths of two cigarettes apart. It receives paste from a paste drum 65 rotating in a bowl 64 adjustably mounted on the frame 55. An adjustable scraping plate 71 controls the amount of paste carried by the paste drum 65. The paper then passes between rollers 80, 81 which can be moved relative to each other by a screw 89, and are so placed that the distance of their centre line from the knife 36 corresponds with the length of one cork tip. Each tip is pressed upon a pasted part of the strip P, which is then carried round a drum 82 where the tips are firmly pressed on to the paper strip as they pass on the inside. To alter the position of the rollers 80, 81 relative to the cork strip feed, these rollers are carried by a double lever arm 91 provided with an adjusting screw 93. In a modification, the paste is applied to the cork strip by passing it over a paste drum.
