Abstract

Detergent compositions contain an organic ionic soapless detergent and not more than 20 per cent, by weight of the detergent, of a compound having the general formula R-CO-Ar-OZ, where R-CO- is an acyl group derived from a fatty acid and contains in all 6-10 carbon atoms, Ar represents a benzene or naphthalene nucleus, and Z is a hydrogen atom or the grouping -R1-OH, where R1 is an alkylene radical, a dialkylene ether radical or a polyalkylene polyether radical containing no more than 15 carbons in all or more than 5 in any one uninterrupted chain of carbon atoms, and not more than 4 oxygen atoms. The acyl group is preferably in the para-position to the hydroxyl or ether group, and Ar is preferably a benzene nucleus which may be further substituted, e.g. by hydroxyl groups. Acylresorcinol derivatives within the general formula are particularly efficient. The alkylene radical or alkylene portions in R1 may have a straight or a branched chain. The alkylene radical may have one or more substituents such as chlorine, methyl or hydroxyl. The grouping -R1-OH is preferably derived from ethylene glycol or glycerol, or consists of two condensed ethylene oxide units. The compounds of the invention may be p-caprylyl- or p-caprylphenol, p-caprylylphenyl monoethylene glycol ether or mono - alpha - glycerolether or the corresponding p-caprylphenyl compound, p-caprylylresorcinol mono-alpha-glycerol ether, monoethylene glycol ether or diethylene glycol ether. The compositions may contain builders or diluents such as sulphates, silicates, carbonates, phosphates such as tetrasodium pyro-phosphate or pentasodium tripolyphosphate, and salts of carboxymethylcellulose. An example of a composition according to the invention consists of 21.5 per cent by weight of the sodium salt of a sulphonated dodecyltoluene (derived from tetrapropylene polymer), 22.5 of tetrasodium pyrophosphate and 56 of other inorganic builders (mainly sodium sulphate) to which is added 1.5-2.0 per cent of para - caprylylresorcinol mono - alpha - glycerol ether.
