Abstract
Detergent compositions consist of an organic detergent material and a foam-improving agent, wherein said organic detergent material consists of a first water-soluble salt of a C9-C18 monoalkyl benzene sulphonic acid and a second water-soluble salt of a C14-C18 monoalkyl sulphate, a sulphated C2-C4 alkylolamide of a saturated C14-C18 fatty acid or an N-acyl C2-C4 aminoalkane sulphonate, the acyl group of the latter sulphonate having 14-18 carbon atoms, wherein said water-soluble salt of said monoalkyl sulphate, said sulphated alkylolamide, or said N-acyl aminoalkane sulphonate constitutes 15-50 per cent by weight of said detergent material, the balance of said detergent material being constituted by said water-soluble salt of said C9-C18 monoalkylbenzene sulphonic acid, and wherein said foamimproving agent is a p-acylphenol glycol ether of the formula R-CO-C6H4O(CH2-CHR1-O)n-H (see Group IV (b)) in which R is a straight-chain alkyl group of 9-13 C, R1 is H or CH3 and n is 1, 2 or 3, said p-acylphenol glycol ether being present in said detergent material in a proportion of 1-5 per cent by weight, based on total solids content, or of 10-50 per cent by weight based on said second water-soluble salt. Bleaching agents, e.g. hypochlorites, may be present; also, the usual builders, e.g. sodium carbonate, silicate polyphosphate, borate, sulphate or chloride. Acylphenol glycol ethers specified are the mono-, di- and triethyleneglycol ethers and the monopropylene glycol ether of p-lauroyl phenol, the mono- and di-ethylene glycol ethers of p-myristoyl phenol, and the monoethylene glycol ether of p-decanoyl phenol. The monoalkylsulphate salts may be sodium, potassium, magnesium, ammonium, alkyl ammonium and alkylol ammonium salts and may be derived from tallow. The monoalkylbenzene sulphonic acids may be obtained from benzene and propylene polymers in the usual way. The alkylolamides may be obtained by reacting an alkylolamine with a saturated fatty acid from hydrogenated tallow, followed by sulphation and neutralization. The N-acyl aminoalkane sulphonates may also be obtained by reaction of tallow fatty acids with N-acyl taurines.ALSO:p-n-Acylphenol glycol ethers of the formula: <FORM:0783318/IV (a)/1> where R is straight-chain alkyl of 9-13 C, R1 is H or CH3 and n is 1, 2 or 3, are prepared by reaction of the corresponding p-acylphenol with 1-3 mols. ethylene-oxide, in presence of an acid or basic catalyst (e.g. sulphuric and phosphoric acids, boron trifluoride, alkali metal hydroxides and alcoholates, at atmospheric or raised pressure. Examples describe the reaction of (1) 1, 2 and 3 mols. of ethylene oxide or 1 mol. of propylene oxide with p-lauroyl phenol; (2) 1 mol. of ethylene oxide with p-decanoyl phenol; (3) 1 or 2 mols. of ethylene oxide with p-myristoyl phenol.
