Abstract

The wetting and penetrating power of alkali lyes of at least 10 DEG B<\>ae. is increased by the addition of those naphthenic acids which are not salted out by the lyes. In modifications: (a) ether alcohols, amino alcohols or ammonium bases having one or more hydroxyalkyl groups are added when the lyes employed are of lower concentration than the limiting concentration, at which point the activity of the naphthenic acids is at a maximum (b) dispersing agents-other than phenols are added when the concentration of the lyes is not sufficiently high to disperse the naphthenic acids. In examples: (1) shrinkage tables are given for unscoured cotton or crude cotton yarn when immersed in lyes of various strengths containing naphthenic acids of various origins; (2) shrinkage tables are given for cotton when mixtures of naphthenic acids with dihydroxyethylbutylamine, dihydroxyethylamylamine, monohydroxyethylamylamine, diethyleneglycolmonobutylether, the acetal of glycerol and isomeric methylcyclohexanone, glycerol-a -amylether and amylglucoside are added to lyes of various strengths; (3) shrinkage tables are given when naphthenic acids are used with the following dispersing agents; sodium propyl and butylsulphate, the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of diethyleneglycolmonobutylether, the sodium salt of a highly sulphonated castor oil, sodium butoxyethanesulphonate, isovaleric and methylisobutylacetic acid; (4) naphthenic acids are used in p the manufacture of alkali cellulose, the removal of the resinous impurities is facilitated; (5) naphthenic acids are added to lyes containing the following textile auxiliary agents; common salt, glycerine, sodium sulphate, waterglass, copperoxide ammonia and zinc chloride; the wetting properties are not reduced by the presence of the auxiliary agents; (6) a naphthenic acid is added to a lye containing sodium hypochlorite used for bleaching. The following dispersing agents may also be employed: sulphonic acids of mononuclear alkylated and/or hydroxylated aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic and heterocyclic sulphonates with at least three carbon atoms, sulphuric esters of ether alcohols and aminoalcohols, aliphatic monocarboxylic acids with branched or unbranched chains containing 3-12 carbon atoms, e.g. isocaproic acid, isoamylacetic acid, ethylpropylacetic acid, dipropylacetic acid and 1 : 3-dimethylvaleric acid, 3-methylcaproic acid and 3-methylcaprylic acid. Ethers of polyglycerines and acetal compounds of aldehydes with polyhydric alcohols may be used to improve the wetting properties of the naphthenic acids. The use of potash lyes is mentioned. Specifications 27020/97, [Class 42], 276,352, [Class 42 (i)], 414,485, and 461,747 are referred to.
