Abstract
732,201. Diaphragm valves. GRINNELL CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1953 [Aug. 28, 1952], No. 22444/53. Class 135. In a valve of the kind in which a flexible diaphragm 12 co-operates with a shallow weir 10b extending transversely across a substantially straight passageway in the valve body 10, undue flexing of the diaphragm is prevented without unduly increasing the area of the diaphragm exposed to line pressure (a) by making the body opening 10e above the weir, the bottom end of the valve bonnet 14, and the diaphragm which is clamped between these parts of saddle-shape with the high parts 12a<SP>1</SP> of the saddle above the longitudinal axis of the valve body and the low parts 12a<SP>11</SP> of the saddle adjacent the ends of the weir, or (b) by making the diaphragm and the co-operating parts of the bonnet and the valve body of oval configuration. Figs. 1 and 7 show the arrangement (a) referred to above. The weir 10b merges into the body passageway which has sockets 10d at its ends to receive pipe ends 11. The flange 14a at the end of the bonnet and the rim of the opening 10e are both downwardly inclined towards the weir at points 10f above the axis of the valve body and become progressively less inclined towards the sides until at points adjacent the ends of the weir they are horizontal. The diaphragm has a bead 12b outside its clamped edge and apertured ears 12c, Fig. 7, adjacent the ends of the weir to receive bolts 16 which pass through mating projections 10c, 14b on the body and bonnet respectively. The bonnet houses the usual compressor 18 connected to a headed stud 28 partly embedded in a boss 12e on the diaphragm. The compressor may have a continuous surface, but preferably has spaced fingers 18a co-operating with a finger plate clamped between the body and the bonnet or with integral bonnet fingers 14d shaped to support the diaphragm in the open position and adapted to prevent rotation of the compressor. The latter is non-rotatably connected to a screwed spindle 20 arranged in a screwed sleeve 22 to which is fixed a hand wheel 24. Figs. 8 and 13 show the arrangement (b) referred to above. In this case the bonnet 14 and its flange 14a, the opening 10e and the diaphragm 12, Fig. 13, are of oval shape and their cooperating parts are in one plane. The two arrangements (a) and (b) may be combined, and thus the valve shown in Figs. 1 and 8 may be modified to accommodate a diaphragm which is both oval and saddle-shaped.
