A machine for turning the cover strip of a platform shoe has means 1, 2 to grip the cover strip on opposite sides of the shoe near one end thereof and spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than the width of the shoe at that location, a shoe bottom engaging member 28, and means to cause relative movement heightwise of the shoe between member 28 and the gripping means to reverse the cover strip. The grippers each comprise a thin smooth fixed jaw 12, 13, and a movable jaw 20, 21 mounted on a bracket 8, 9 pivoted on members 6, 7 fixed to table 3, the brackets being urged by springs 18, 19 into contact with stop screws 14, 15 (not shown), adjustment of which determines the spacing between grippers 1, 2. At least one of the gripper brackets is adjustable towards or away from the end of the shoe, thus, as shown, gripper 2 is adjusted by means of screws on member 7 engaging in a slot 44 in table 3, and a quick release means is preferably provided, as, for example, a spring plunger 47 which is engaged in any one of a series of recesses 48 by a handcontrol 49. The member 28 comprises a rod 29 slidable through table 3 and having a shoe rest secured to its upper end. This rest member may comprise a flat plate having an upstanding ridge or protuberance along its edge to locate the end of the shoe, or, as shown, may comprise an inverted cup member 30 slidable vertically on a member 31 (not shown) secured to rod 29 and adjusted by means of a finger screw 33 which controls the engagement of a spring- pressed toothed member with vertically spaced teeth on member 31. Rod 29 is moved upwardly and grippers 20, 21 moved inwardly by means of pneumatic cylinders 39, 22, 23, the air supply being controlled by a treadle 24 operating valve means 25 connected to piping 40, 26, 27. Cylinder 39 may be controlled by a separate treadle. Gripper members 20, 21 are mounted so that they may yield outwardly against springs located in cylinders 22, 23. Two or more fixed and movable grippers may be provided to engage the cover strips on each side of the shoe. Specification 645,929 is referred to.
