Be it known that I, Josnrrr GoULnnoUnN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Leicester, in the county of Leicester, England, have invented certain Improve ments in Machines for Vorking Uppers Over Lasts, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
lhis invention relates to machines for working or shaping uppers over lasts, and has more particular reference to operating means which is moved inwardly over the shoeagainst resistance of the shoe materials. An instance of such operating means is found in the wiper and tacker unit or units of a well-known type of pulling-over machine (the general characteris tics of which, as far as they concern the features of the present invention, are illustrated in United States Letters Patent No. 1,029,887, granted on June 11, 1912, and No. 1,135,954i, granted on April 13, 1915, upon applications of R. F. lttcFeely) and the invention is herein illustrated in its application to mechanism of that general type,
which it is one of the objects of the invention to improve in the different respects hereinafter set forth,- although it is to be recognized that in many of its aspects the invention is not limited to an organization of that particular type nor to machines including pulling-over means in their organ ization.
In the type of machine above mentioned each wiper and tacker unit is moved inwardly, to lay orwipe the margin of the upper over the sole and to position the unit for driving the upper fastening tack or tacks, by mechanism which is yieldable in response to resistance encountered by the unit and is intended to yield after the unit has arrived in proper relation to the shoe for the tacking operation. The provision for such yield enables the unit to accommodate itself to diiferent shapes or sizes of shoes,- and in the particular type of ma chine shown in said patent has for a fur Serial No. 617,608.
connections. Such an organization, however, imposes limitations upon the tightness with which the upper can be fastened on the last and upon the certainty in respect to the position of the upper fastening tacks. These limitations arise from the fact thatunless the wipers are advanced well over the edge of the shoe bottom, or at least are pressed hard against the upper before the latter is released by the pulling-over grippers, the tension of the upper is likely to be relaxed more or less before the upper is fastened, and from the further factthat if the wiper mechanism is constructed or adjusted to apply sufiicient pressure to afford an adequate margin of safety in this respect, there is danger that in operating on some shoes the resistance encountered by the wipers will be so great as to cause the operating connections to yield prematurely and thus prevent the tacking means from being moved far enough inwardly over the bottom of the shoe prior to the tack driving operation, so that the tacks will not be driven at such distance from the edge of the shoe bottom as to hold the upper properly.
lVith the object, among others, of avoiding the above mentioned difficulties, the present invention provides, as one important feature, a novel construction and arrangement of means for controlling a device for operating on a shoe (herein shown as a wiper and tacker unit), the construction shown comprising novel means for moving the unit inwardly over the bottom of the shoe through positively acting connections and for limiting the positive movement of the unit as determined by the particular shoe operated upon. In the construction herein illustrated such control is etl' cted by the provision of a cam member which is set or positioned by connections to a clamp on gaging the side of the shoe and which acts automatically at a time thus determined to release an element of the positive means provided for moving the wiper and tacker unit inwardly, thus rendering said element yield able only after the wiper and tacker unit has been moved substantially into proper position for driving the tacks, to accommodate the operating means to different shapes,
and sizes of shoes without damage to the machine or to the shoe and, as applied to the particular type of machine illustrated,
to cause the tacks/to be driven in response to such yield in the operating connections.
Further features of the invention are to be recognized in novel means for moving a wiper positively inward over a shoe to a position determinedby the shoe, and in novel means for mounting a wiper. to'permitit to yield universally in directions transverse to its overwiping plane, an'd'it may be, as herein shown, to prevent it from yielding in said plane. The above and other featuresof the invention, including certain details of construction and combinations of pars, will now be more particularly described by reference to the accompanying drawings and point-ed out inthe claims.

It will be understood that in the type of machine illustrated the upper is pulled by oppo ite side grippers, oneof which is shown 2, as well as by a toe gripper, the shoe being held by a sole rest t against the pull applied to the upper. lVhile the upper is held by the grippers side clamps are moved inwardly into supporting and holding engagement with the shoe at its opposite sides, these clamps"comprising arms (3, one only of which is shown in the drawings, which carry relatively movable clamp members 8 and 10 for engaging the shoe in different loca tions. The member 8 ismounted on a block 12 swiveled in the end of a clamp support or slide l l so that the clamp member may adjust itself to the shoe about an axis e2;- teuding: heightwise of the'shoe. After the clamps have engaged the opposite sides of the shoe the margin oi? the 'up'peris wiped inwardly over the sole and is fastened, at least at the sices of the forepart. by driving a plurality of tack spaced along the margin of the sole. For overwiping and tacking the upper at each side of the forepart a wiper and tacker unit is provided comprising a supporting arm 16 which is swung inwardly toward the shoe andcarries one or more wiper plates or wipers 18 for engaging the margin of the upper, a pair of such wiper plates being usually provided at each side of the shoe. After the wipers have been moved inwardly far enough to press and hold the upper on the edge of the sole, the arm 16 engages a latch 20 on the gripper to release the gripper from the upper. The wiper plates 18 are carried by a blocl: 22 which also carries the tack holders and which is swiveled on the arm 16 to turn, together with tack drivers 2-Jlabout an axis extending lengthwise of the arm, as described in the prior patents. The tact: drivers 2i, which are equal in number to the number oi tacks which are to be driven at the side of the shoe, are operated by a spring-impelled driver bar 26 (Fig. 3). In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for operating on a shoe movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe against resistance of the shoe matcrials, of mechanism for imparting inward movement to said operating means including a spring plunger yieldable in response to re sistance to such inward movement, a locking member arranged to engage said plunger to prevent it from yielding and having an opening to receive the plunger, and a cam arranged to move said locking member into position to aline its opening with the plunger at a predetermined point in the inward movement of the operating means.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a wiper and tackerunit movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and having tack driving means thereon, mechanism for imparting inwird movement to said wiper and tac er unit including parts relatively mov able in wedging engagement with each other in response to resistance encountered. by said unit to release the tack driving means, a

In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, or a wiper and tacker unit movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and having tack driving means thereon, mechanism for imparting inward movement to said wiper and tacker unit including a spring plunger yieldable in response to resistance to such inward movement to cause the release of the tack driving means, a locking device carried by said mechanism for preventing the plunger from yielding, a controlling member constructed to operate said locking device to releasethe plunger at a predetermined point in the inward movement of the unit, a clamp torengaging the shoe, and connections between said clamp and controlling member for setting saidmember as determined by the shoe.
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a wiper and tacker unit movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and having tack driving means thereon, mecha nism for imparting inward movement to said wiper and tacker unit including a member yieldable in response to resistance encountered by said unit to cause the release of the tack driving means, a device for looking said member against yielding, a cam for operating said locking device to release the member, shoe clamping mechanism having an abutment shoulder arranged to be engaged by the wiper and tacker unit to limitthe inward movement of said unit, and connections between the clamping mechanism and said cam for setting said cam in accordance with the position of the clamping mechanism to effect the release of said mem-. ber at a time coinciding substantially with the time of engagement of the unit with said abutment shoulder.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a wiper and tacker unit movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and h ving tack driving means thereon, mechanism for imparting inward movement to said wiper and tacker unit including a member yieldable in response to resistance to such inward movement to cause the release of the tack driving means, a device for preventing said member i'rom yielding, a. controlling member for operating said device to release the yieldable member at a predetermined point in the inward movement of the unit, shoe clamping mechanism including an abutment shoulder arranged to be en-- gaged by said wiper and tacker unit to limit the inward movement of the unit, said clamping mechanism being adjustable to position said shoulder at difierent distances from the shoe, and connections between the clamping mechanism and said controlling member controlled by the adjustment of said mechanism to determine the time of action of the member in accordance with the dis tance of said shoulder from the shoe.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a wiper and tacker unit movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and having tack driving means thereon, mechanism for imparting inward movement to said wiperand tacker unit including a member yieldable in response to resistance to such inward movement to cause the release of the tack driving means, a device for preventing said member from yielding, a controlling member tor operating said device to release the yieldable member at a predetermined point in the inward movement of the unit, adjustable means for variably limiting the inward movement of the unit, and connections controlled by adjustment of said limiting means for varying the position of said controlling member in accordance with such adjustment.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a side wiper and tacker unit movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and having tack driving means thereon, mechanism for moving said unit inwardly including parts relatively movable in re sponse toresistance to such inward movement to cause release of the tack driving means, and side clamping mechanism having a shoe clamping member and also an abutment shoulder arranged to be engaged by said wiper and tacker unit to limit the inward movement of said unit, said clamp-- ing member being adjustable relatively to said shoulder to position said shoulder at different distances from the shoe.

In a machine of the class'described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a side wipe-r and tacker unit movable inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and having tack driving means thereon, mechanism for imparting inward movement to said wiper and tacker unit comprising parts relatively movable in response to resistance to such inward movement to cause release of the tack driving means, said clamping mechanism comprising a. support and a block swivelled thereon to turn about an axis-extending heightwise of the shoe, said block having an abutment shoulder arranged to be engaged by the wiper and tacker unit to limitthe inward movement of said unit, and a shoe engaging clamp member secured on said block and adjustable relatively to the block in directions laterally of the shoe.

In "a'machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a wiper and tucker support movable toward and from the shoe and having tack driving means and a wiper thereon, mechanism for moving said support toward the shoe including a member yieldable in response to resistance to such movement of the support to cause the release of the tack driving means, a d vice for preventing said member from yielding; to cause the support to be moved positively through said member, means controlledby the shoe for operating said device to release the member at a point in the movement of the support determined by the-shoe, and means torcontrolling said wiper to prevent it from yielding in the plane of its inwarc movement over the shoe.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a wiper support, a wiper on said support for wiping the upper inwardly over the bottom of the shoe, and'means for controlling said wiper to prevent it from yielding in its overwiping plane while permitting it to yield universally in directions transverse to said plane.
19. Ina machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, of a wiper support, a wiper on said support for wiping the upper inwardly oven the bottom of the shoe, and a cupped hear ing between said wiper and its support permitting the wiper to tip universally in directions transverse to the plane of the shoe bottom.
20. In a machine of the class described, the combination with. shoe positioning means, of a wiper support, a wiper on said support for wiping the upper inwardly over the bottom of the shoe, said wiper having a projection thereon arranged to engage in :a cupped recess in the support to permit the wiperto tip universally in directions transverse to the plane of theshoebottom while preventing it from yielclingin its overwiping plane, and a spring acting on. said wiper v to control its tipping movement.
21. In a machine of the class described, the combination means,'o'l:' a wiper for wiping the upper inwardly over the bottom of the shoe, means for imparting inward movement positively to said wiper, and means controlled by the shoe for determining automatically the limit of such positive movement of the wiper.
22. In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe positioning means, olr'a wiper for wipinglthe upperwinwardly over the bottomof the shoe, operating means for impartinginward movement positively to said wiper including anxelement arranged to be rendered yieldable, and automatic means controlled by the shoe for rendering said element yieldable at a time in the inward movement of the wiper determined by the shoe.
