Abstract
355,351. Boot-making machines. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Bazzoni, L. J. ; Swampscott, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 24, 1930, No. 16027. Convention date, June 28, 1929. [Class 17 (i).] Heels, covering; trimming.-A machine for use in covering channelled heels comprises positioning means for the heel and means for tucking the marginal part of the cover into the channel. Preferably, means are provided for trimming the cover, the two operations being performed at different stations in the machine. The tucking blades 50, Fig. 6, are adjustable about pivots 40, Fig. 3, the carriers of the blades being geared together for equal angular movement and being clamped in adjusted position by screws 48, Fig. 1, engaging slots. This mechanism is mounted on arms 36 pivoted on a shaft 34 and continued beyond the shaft as a lever 68 having at its end a roll 70 on an eccentric adjustable pin, the roll engaging a cam on a power shaft 24. A heel holder comprises a pair of arms 80, 82 pivoted at 84 and urged apart by a spring 92. To clamp the arms on the heel, a handle 100 is pivoted at 96 to one arm and operates a cam 94 engaging a screw 102 emerging from a casing 108 secured to the other arm. In order that the clamps may engage the heel with adjustable resilient pressure, the screw 102 is threaded into a nut which can slide but not rotate in the casing and is backed by a spring adjustable by a screw 112. The arm 80 is linked to a cam-operated. arm 122. The trimming mechanism comprises shear blades 136, Fig. 3, adjustable towards and away from each other, and blades 150 adjustable in height and transversely of the machine, mounted on slides operated by cams 156. The cam shaft is driven by a worm on the shaft of an electric motor 30, Fig. 1, through a one-revolution clutch actuated by a treadle-rod 168. In operation, the heel 64 is placed with its channels in engagement with the blades 50, the handle 100 depressed and the clutch tripped. The arms 36 then descend and the heel moves to trimming position over the shear blades 136, the edges of the cover overlapping the edges of the blades. The knives 150 move inwardly and trim the margins of the cover, and the heel moves back to its original position, the blades 50 wiping the edges of the cover inward in the latter part of this movement. The arms 36 then move upwards to tuck the margins of the cover into the channels simultaneously on the two sides, and the machine comes to rest. The heel may then be released by lifting the handle 100 and a new workpiece positioned. Specification 296,401, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], is referred to.
