Abstract

619,813. Feeding sheets. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., and ROWLANDS, T. Dec. 30, 1946, No. 37982. [Class 100(i)] In a sheet-feeding device for printing and like machines, the sheets are registered laterally by means of a slidable member 27 formed with a projection 28 which is made to engage the side edge of a sheet being fed as a support 25 is moved inwards from the position shown in Fig. 2 until the slide 27 is arrested b y engagement of the projection 28 with the edge of the sheet. The slide 27 is of dovetail shape and slides in guides in a support plate 2-5 attached to an extension plate 26 of a reciprocating carriage 12. The sheet is held to the slide 27 by a gripper member in the form of a roller 16 mounted on a lever 15, and as the support 25 is moved outwards the projection 28 engages a fixed side gauge 29 which arrests the slide 27 with the sheet correctly registered as shown in Fig. 5. The mechanism is supported by an adjustable clamp 1, and operated by a shaft 7 which is mounted similarly to the shaft of the side-registering device described in Specification 501,364, and is moved inwards by spring action and outwards by a Bowden wire or like member 23 operated by a cam on the printing-machine. As the support 25 moves inwards the cam roller is held raised by the action of a collar 9 upon the end 17 of gripper lever 15, but when the support moves outwards a collar 18 pressed by a spring 19 moves the gripper on to the sheet. The gripper lever may be detachably mounted so as to be replaceable by levers which exert a different pressure so as to deal with sheets of different thicknesses, or it may be mounted about an eccentric which can be adjusted to vary the gripping pressure. The sheets are guided into position by pivotally mounted guides 31 which are raised to an adjustable extent by outward movement of the reciprocating carriage 12 which supports the registering devices, and the guide 31 nearer to the printing- machine is given an extra movement so as not to impede the travel of the sheet towards the machine.
