Abstract

476,503. Feeding sheets. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. June 9, 1936, No. 16143. Convention date, May 8. [Class 100 (i)] In a sheet-feeding mechanism, the sheets are fed from a stack 51 by means of sheetengaging devices 172 operated from a reciprocating carriage 157 sliding on a trackway 152, the operating means for the carriage comprising an adjustable link 158 attached to a lever 652 operable by a cam 601 arranged between the lever 652 and a second lever 656 which can operate the lever 652 through a flexible connection. The invention is described in connection with a machine in which the rear edges of the sheets are separated from the stack 51 by means of mechanism as set forth in Specification 476,502, and a sheet stripper 62 prevents double feed as described in Specification 476,522. The sheet-engaging device 172 are in the form of suction nozzles, one carried by a rod 173 at each side of the pile. Each nozzle 172 is carried by a pair of parallel links 175, and the height of the nozzle is controlled by means of a roller 177 on one of the links which moves over a fixed cam 154 as the carriage 157 reciprocates. When the roller 177 rests on the low part of the cam 154, the nozzle 172 occupies the position shown in dotted lines. It is moved to the full line position in Fig. 1 by the action of the high part 601a of the cam 601 on a roller 653 carried by the lever 652, and the sheet is thus carried into contact with forwarding rollers 64, 66 which advance the sheet over a feed table 65. The nozzle 172 is returned to its dotted line position by the action of the high part 601a of the cam on the lever 656 which transmits its motion to the lever 652 by means of a yoke 659 fitted with a spring 665 serving to press the lever 652 backwards until the nozzle engages the pile. When this happens, owing to the resilient operation of the lever no breakage is likely to occur. A pin-and-slot connection between the lever 654 and the yoke 659 allows relative movement between these parts.
