[Also in Group XIX] An apparatus for testing the moisture content of granular or powdered solids comprises a weighted body, having a sharp wedge-shaped edge, arranged to be retained above the surface of the material to be tested and which, upon release, can fall freely and penetrate the surface of the material to a distance which is said to give a measure of the moisture content. As shown in Fig. 1, a body C, loaded with weights G and provided with a long blade A, is held in its upper position by a pivoted catch H which may be depressed to allow the body C to fall freely past guide rollers D. The material to be tested is loaded into a container P<SP>1</SP> and consolidated by rotating a handle W a predetermined number of times, the rotation of the the rotation of the handle W causing a cam U to lift and drop the container P<SP>1</SP>. The upper portion P of the container P<SP>1</SP> is pivoted at P<SP>2</SP> so that it may be swung to one side to level of the material and then swung back again to the position shown. The catch is then depressed releasing the body C and the depth to which the blade A enters the material under test may be ascertained from a scale L by means of the index K. The blade A may be flat with a double-chisel edge. An alternative form of blade, Fig. 4, comprises a cylinder Y open at both ends and with a double-chisel edge Z at its lower end.
