Abstract

515,921. Hygrometric apparatus; specific-gravity estimating-apparatus. BOYLE. J.K. July 6, 1938, No. 20032. [Class 97 (iii)] An instrument for determining the specific gravities of dry granular substances a n d the moisture content of moist granular substances of known specific gravity comprises a vessel 3, 7, containing a float 11 and carrying a slidable cursor 9. As shown the vessel is preferably formed as a cup 3 to which is secured by a bayonet joint a conical lid 4 with an upstanding tube 7 at the centre. In use a , predetermined weight of dry substance, e.g., sand, and a predetermined volume of water, are placed in the vessel 3, 7, and the cursor 9 moved on the tube 7 until an index 1 on the cursor is against the zero graduation of a moisture content scale 12 on the float. A second index on the cursor 9 then indicates the specific gravity of the sand. on a specific gravity scale (not shown) marked on the tube 7. The same predetermined weight of moist sand and the same predetermined volume of water are the placed in the emptied vessel 3, 7, and the cursor 9 moved until the second index thereon coincides the specific gravity graduation previously determined. The first index on the cursor 9 then indicates the moisture content on the float scale 12. The two scales and two indices may be variously mounted on the float 11, tube 7, and cursor 9. Interchangeable scales of different ranges may be used.
