Abstract
731,660. Emergency escape apparatus. M.L. AVIATION CO., Ltd., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. July 1, 1948 [July 1, 1947], No. 17359/47. Class 4. Aircraft escape apparatus comprises a detachable cabin 10, normally forming an aerodynamic part of the fuselage, but adapted to be separated from the aircraft 11 during flight. In an emergency coupling 13, 16 is released by withdrawing a plunger 26 into a cylinder 27 and the cabin is then forced away from the aircraft by spring-loaded pins 18 mounted between bulkheads 12, 15. As the cabin moves away, air-brakes 29 are released from a lipped fairing 30 and opened out by springs 33, Fig. 3, to retard the aircraft so that the cabin falls free. Covers 39 are then jettisoned, releasing parachutes 38, to support the cabin. Flight controls between cabin and aircraft are interrupted at the moment of separation by release of interlocking members or by cartridge-fired shearing devices.
