Abstract
699,290. Dropping cabins from aircraft. M. L. AVIATION CO., Ltd. Feb. 12, 1952 [Dec. 11, 1950], No. 30263/50. Class 9(ii) [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIII] In an aircraft emergency escape apparatus the cabin forming the nose of the aircraft can be detached from the fuselage and brought to earth by parachute: Separation of the cabin and fuselage is effected by a cartridge-operated mechanism which first disengages the couplings securing the cabin to the fuselage, breaks the electric control circuits, erects the cabin stabilizing fins and finally causes forceful separation of the cabin and fuselage. As shown, Fig. 1, the cabin 1, is separable from the fuselage 2 at 4. The cartridge operated gun, 5, Fig. 2, operates the fins 17, electrical separation 18, and mechanical couplings 15 through the linkwork 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16. During the final period of its stroke the gun operates a telescopic cylinder (not shown) which thrusts the cabin and fuselage apart. The parachutes (not shown) are released by a static line attached to the fuselage and three sets of progressively larger parachutes are opened and then detached at predetermined intervals by explosive devices before the final group is opened. Specification 645,605, [Group XXVIII], is referred to.
