Abstract
A ceramic element suitable for use as a semi-conductor resistor in low voltage ignition systems, comprises a layer of a fired mixture of at least 5 per cent zinc oxide and 95 per cent of oxides of metals from any of the groups Ib, IVb, Vb, VIIa and VIII of the Periodic Table, on a refractory insulating base comprising alumina, or mixtures of alumina and silica or of alumina magnesia and silica. The metal oxides may be applied as a dry powder and fired at 750 DEG to 1400 DEG C. to secure adhesion of the layer to the ceramic base. Metal electrodes may be applied to the layer by electroplating copper from a cyanide solution. A layer of zinc p nickel oxide may be applied by immersing a disc of alumina in a powder consisting of 80 parts of zinc oxide and 20 parts of nickel carbonate and firing at 1750 DEG C. In a further example alumina base material is immersed in a mixture of zinc oxide with 3-25 per cent of titanium dioxide and fired at 1300 DEG C. The surface of the ceramic base may be grooved to increase the resistance path of the layer. According to the Provisional Specification, the metal oxides may also be taken from Group IIb, and carbonates may be used in place of oxides. The layer may be applied as a thin film in a binding medium, and magnesium oxide, zirconia, thoria, and steatite may be used as the base material.
