Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a thermal head having abrasion resistance sufficient in such a case that thick paper is used, by forming an abrasion resistant layer from a mixture of Al2O3 and at least one compound selected from Ta2O5, ZrO2, Y2O3, CaO and MgO. CONSTITUTION:A glaze layer 2 is formed on a ceramic substrate 1 and a heat generating resistor layer 3, an electric conductive layer 4 and an abrasion resistant layer 5 are successively laminated to form a thermal head. The abrasion resistant layer is composed of a membrane of a mixture consisting of Al2O3 and at least one compound selected from Ta2O5, ZrO2, Y2O3, CaO and MgO. For example, this membrane is formed by RF sputtering using the mixture as a target and sufficient in a thickness of about 2-5mum and the effective addition amount thereof is 2-60mol.%. This thermal head generates no damage in the abrasion resistance layer and has long life and is especially effective in such a case where thick paper is used.
