A regulating device for maintaining the speed of a hydraulic motor, reciprocating or rotary, at a predetermined value comprises a member responsive to variations in the motor outlet pressure from a predetermined datum value to regulate a servomotor actuating means .controlling the quantity of liquid supplied. to the motor. As shown, the outlet pipe 3, Fig. 1, from a hydraulic motor M has an adjustable throttle member 4 to maintain a datum pressure in the pipe 3. A spring-loaded piston valve 11 responsive at one end to variations in this datum pressure controls the supply and exhaust of pressure liquid to and from opposite sides of the vane 14a of a servomotor 14. Liquid is supplied to the servomotor through a branch 15 from a line 2 connecting the motor M and a pump P and exhausted through a branch 16 having a throttle member 17 to prevent over-regulation of the servomotor. To control the supply of liquid to the motor M, the vane 14a may control a rheostat connected in series with the shunt winding of an electric motor driving the pump P to control the speed of the electric motor. In another embodiment, the motor outlet pipe 3, Fig. 2, having an adjustable throttle 4 is connected by a branch 5 to a Bourdon tube 18 which through a rod 19 deflects a jet tube 20 continuously fed with pressure liquid from a branch 15 from the line 2 to move a piston in a servomotor 21 in either direction from its central neutral position. The servomotor 14 or the servomotor 21 may alter the position of a throttle valve in the line 2 or in a pump supply line 1, change the operating speed of an induction motor driving the pump, the ratio of a gear-box between the motor and pump or the opening of a by-pass valve in the line 2, to regulate the amount of liquid supplied to the motor M.
