Abstract

A composition which may be employed as a spinning oil, and which may be scoured from textile fibres which have been lubricated with its aid, comprises a metal alkyl sulphate, obtained by the sulphation of a hydrocarbon material comprising an olefin having a boiling point of at least 180 DEG C., together with water, a fatty acid having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, a mineral oil and either a diethylene glycol alkyl ether or normal butyl alcohol. Despite the presence of the water, the composition consists of a single liquid phase. The composition may also contain an inorganic ammonium or alkali metal salt such as ammonium or alkali metal sulphate or carbonate. The metal alkyl sulphate may be obtained by the sulphation of a shale oil distillate fraction, for example an alkali metal alkyl sulphate prepared according to the process of Specification 657,598, [Group IV (b)]. The fatty acid may be oleic acid or a commercial oleine. In the examples spinning oils are described which consist of Venezuelan spindle oil, oleine and (1 and 2) an aqueous solution of a sodium alkyl sulphate sold under the name "Comprox A" (the word "Comprox" is a Registered Trade Mark), or an aqueous solution of a sodium alkyl sulphate made by sulphation of a shale oil of boiling range 200-300 DEG C., together with diethylene glycol butyl ether; or (3) an aqueous solution of a sodium alkyl sulphate made by sulphation of a shale oil of boiling range 200-350 DEG C., together with normal butyl alcohol.
