Abstract
<PICT:0730789/III/1> In a process for treating granular material with a gas the material is passed in a layer downwardly over an inclined surface through which the gas streams upwardly, the rate of flow of the gas through the material being higher in the zones where the speed of travel of the material is greatest than where the speed is lower. The apparatus claimed includes a vessel 1 having an inclined surface 15, over which the material travels and formed by spaced overlapping plates 9, a material inlet 2, a material outlet 3, a gas inlet 4 and guide plates 7 adjacent the upper surface of the material layer and arranged with their lower edges in stepped form, the exhaust gases escaping through outlet 5. The widths of the slots between the plates 9 may increase in the direction of the outlet 3.
