721,288. Drying or cooling granular material. RUHRCHEMIE AKT.-GES. Jan. 11, 1952 [Jan. 15, 1951], No. 900/52. Classes 34 (2) and 64 (2). [Also in Group II] In the drying or cooling of granular material 1 the material is passed downwardly over an inclined louvred surface 3 in a vessel 1, a fluid is passed upwardly through the surface at a rate sufficient to remove the lightest components with the fluid whilstthe heavier components flow downwardly and components of an intermediate size or weight accumulate in a fluidized state at or above the upper surface of the material in the vessel and are removed through lateral outlets 10 over weirs 9. The material enters through inlet 2 and heavier material is discharged over funnel-shaped grid 4 to outlet 5. The fluid, gaseous or liquid, enters through a line 6 and leaves the vessel through outlet 7. The crosssection of the outlet 5 may be controlled according to the feed rate of material or according to the depth of the layer on one of the louvred surfaces as in Specification 665,032.
