Abstract
603,215. Washing granular substances. McNEILL, H. L. March 19,1943, No. 4501. [Class 82(ii)] Solids suspended in a liquid are classified by directing the feed into such a liquid body in a substantially horizontal stream confined at the surface in a zone extending from one side of the body directly across to another side, restricting the stream at its lower portion to a greater degree than that at the surface to obtain a classifying effect, subjecting the matter in the classifying zone to hindered settling by introducing a fluid in an elevating stream into it, discharging the settled solids from the lower portion of the stream, maintaining the finished. product at the surface of the horizontal stream by its movement at a relatively greater velocity and discharging tha latter product at the completion of its movement in the said stream. The feed is fed by a launder 13 in the first compartment 21 of a tank 7 in a horizontal stream which passes over into the second compartment 19 of the tank provided with an overflow 23. The heaviest material settling in the tank 21 is removed by a spiral 22 and the material passing into the compartment 19 is subjected to hindered settling in cones provided with spigots 18 into each of which enters a conduit 16 extending from a funnel 17 into which small quantities of water are supplied continuously. Solids settling in the cones descend through the spigots 18 into the tank and are removed by a spiral 20, the fines passing over the weir 23. In another form of apparatus, Fig. 3, the compartment 21 is provided with cones 10a into which enter conduits 25 connected with a source of liquid or gas, the heavier material descending therein being removed by a reciprocating rake 24. The lighter material passes over into the compartment 19 where it is treated in the cones provided with spigots 18, the heavier material settling in the tank being removed by a rake 24 and the lighter material passing over the weir 23. To assist the elevating tendency of the counter-current flow, a reciprocating diaphragm 26 is provided in the wall of the tank 7 and is actuated by a prime mover 27, e.g. an eccentric.
