[Also in Group I] A grain cutting machine comprises a rotor 30 and a cutting ring 60 having co-operating cutting surfaces adjacent their peripheries, the ring being free to rotate about an axis parallel to, but offset from, the axis of the rotor. The rotor is rotated at such a speed, e.g. on a vertical motor-shaft 2, that grain fed on to its central part 40, e.g. through an axially adjustable duct 16 about which the cutting ring rotates, is flung to the periphery of the rotor where it strikes the inner surface of the cutting ring and causes the latter to rotate. The rotor may be a reversible disc having identical concentric ridges 32, 36 and 38 on both its faces. The surfaces of these ridges, i.e. the cutting surfaces, may be flat and may lie in a plane normal to the rotor axis. The grooves between the ridges may be of uniform depth to gauge the size of grain. Alternatively, the innermost grooves may be deeper than the outermost. The cutting ring may be frusto-conical or doubly frusto-conical (the latter form being reversible) with a cutting rim or rims 64. The inner surface or surfaces of the cutting ring may have outwardly radiating ridges.
