Precipitating and additive reactions in the softening of water are effected in a cylindrical vessel a into which crude water and solution (e.g. lime solution) are introduced by pipes c<SP>1</SP> and c<SP>2</SP> respectively, arranged concentrically and directed to the bottom of the vessel. The mixed liquids thereafter traverse the vessel in an upward direction through a bed of contact grains maintained in suspension, the diameters of the inlet pipes in proportion to the diameter of the vessel being so dimensioned that the time in which the liquid reaction components flow past the self-generating contact grains remains independent of changes in the load. The water leaves by a funnel h located in a widened portion g of the cylinder. Maximum and minimum levels of the top of the contact may be observed at d. Tangential inlets b are provided for introduction of crude water to resuspend the contact bed after a period of inoperation.
