[Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group I] In apparatus for treating liquids, for example, for treating water with lime or for making a solution of lime, in which the liquid is mixed in a space 17 with reagent to form a suspension and flow upward with decreasing velocity in a space 18 through a layer of the suspended particles, the space 18 is provided with one or more components 29, in which the suspension of particles is received and concentrated for continuous or intermittent discharge as shown in Fig. 1 the space 17, to which liquid and reagent are admitted through a pipe 21, is provided with paddles 35 mounted on horizontal axles 37 rotated from a motor 40 and liquid passes therefrom through ports 19 at the lower end of inclined walls 15 which form wedge-shaped spaces 18. The clear water flows over adjustable weirs 24 into the space 20 between the walls 15 and is discharged through a pipe 31. Spaces 29 in which the separated particles concentrate are provided by vertical buffers 28 extending upward from the walls. The material may be discharged from the spaces 29 through a valve controlled from a pump supplying the liquid under treatment or by a water-meter or a clock. The material may be returned to the top of the space 17. The water in the space 20 can be treated with carbon dioxide or flue gas supplied through perforated pipes 26. The parts 19 are controlled by gates operated by means of rods 23. The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 has a mixing space 114 with an agitator 116 rotating on a vertical axis. The liquid flows upward through a layer 152 of suspended particles in an inverted cone 111. The particles are controlled in and discharged from compartments 137 between the cone and the outer covering 110 communicating with the inside of the core through apertures 141 arranged at different levels.
