Abstract

1336372 Aerating liquids UNION CARBIDE CORP 26 April 1971 [27 April 1970 8 April 1971] 11347/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division B1] In a method of aerating a liquid (as in the activated sludge process) a multiplicity of orbiting gas streams of 1/32-“ inch effective diameter is injected as bubbles at a minimum rate of 5 ft./sec. and a minimum flow rate of 0À06 ft<SP>3</SP>/sec./ft<SP>2</SP> of horizontal sparging zone area, the streams orbiting about a vertical axis at a tangential velocity of 4À5-33 ft./sec. and at a rate such that N<SP>2</SP>D<SP>2</SP> is at least 15 ft<SP>2</SP>/sec<SP>2</SP> about the axis (where N = rev.(sec. and D is the diameter in feet of the sparger arms), the ratio of the total cross-sectional area of the gas streams to the swept area being 0À006 to 0À06, and the liquid flowing downwardly through the sparging zone at 2 ft./sec. or more. A fixed apparatus. Fig. 1, comprises a rotatable hollow shaft 2 supplying pressure gas to sparging arms 5, there being vertical baffles 12 and/or spoke-like baffles 9a, 9b, 9c to prevent vortexing; as described there are eight arms and baffles. As shown the liquid is caused to flow downwardly by a propeller 4, but an external pump may be used. The sparging arms may be shrouded, and may be inclined upwardly (see Fig. 4, not shown) or downwardly; they are preferably flattened in cross-section and the major axis inclined (See Figs. 4 and 6, not shown). The effective diameter of the gas discharge openings is 1/32-“ inch; they may be non-circular and may be made on the top, bottom and/or sides of the arms so long as their axes have a vertical component. In an example there were twelve or twenty-four openings in each arm. The propeller, when provided, may be interchangeable and/or of adjustable pitch and is preferably spaced a distance of half to one diameter above the sparging arms; its preferred pitch/diameter ratio is 1À5 and the ratio of sparger arm/propeller diameter 0À8-1À1. The propeller serves also to mix suspended solids with the liquid. A floating apparatus, Fig. 5, especially suitable for use with natural bodies of water comprises a gas-tight floating dome 16 on which are mounted the rotatable shaft and the driving and pumping mechanism; gas trapped beneath the dome may be recirculated. Vertical baffles may be suspended from the dome or supported from the lagoon bottom. The method and apparatus are especially suitable when the gas is oxygen or rich in oxygen, and peferred magnitudes of the various above-quoted dimensions are recited for the treatment by oxygen of waste liquor containing organic solids.
