Abstract
1446402 Aerating liquids BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 5 Sept 1974 [10 Sept 1973 15 Feb 1974 26 Feb 1974] 38845/74 Heading B1C [Also in Division Cl] In a method of and apparatus for dissolving gas in a liquid a stream of the liquid is conducted to an upper end of an upright columnar treatment duct 10 and caused to descend within said duct towards a gas trap 14 at the bottom gas is supplied to the liquid in the duct e.g. together with the inflowing stream of liquid, a pocket 16 of gas being allowed to form at the head of the duct through which pocket the liquid stream flows so as to entrain gas in the descending liquid, and the descent rate of the liquid is chosen so that bubbles of undissolved gas from the gas trap can re-enter and rise in the downflowing stream at the slower-flowing peripheral portions thereof. The gas trap may be formed by an enlarged diameter portion of the column (Fig. 2 not shown) and several columns in series may be used (Fig. 3 not shown) each with a gas pocket at the head and the final column having a gas trap at the bottom thereof. In a sewage treatment plant (Fig. 4) raw sewage fed by line 46 and diluted with recirculated liquid from line 49 is pumped through an oxygenation column 40 to which oxygen is supplied to line 50 and then passes into a pressurised sludge reactor/clarifier 41, through apertures in pipes attached to slowly rotating paddles 45. Clear liquid is discharged through valve 55 (or power-recovery turbine 57) and a proportion recirculated through line 59 (again possibly through a power-recovery turbine 61) while excess sludge is drained from the vessel through line 54. In a different embodiment of sewage treatment plant, Fig. 6, the oxygenator 80 comprises three vertical columnar treatment ducts arranged in series with a gas trap arranged at the base of the final column, the reactor clarifier 81 is a vertically elongate vessel having distinct zones e.g. for sludge compaction, main reaction, and clarification and includes a distinct sterilisation compartment into which the clarified liquor overflows by way of a weir. The plant also includes an air stripper 82 designed to prevent the formation of explosive methane/oxygen mixtures as well as to remove dissolved CO 2 thereby enhancing the oxygenation in oxygenation columns 80. Capacity control is achieved by recycling to a wet well 83.
