Abstract
730,265. Annealing glass. COMPAGNIES REUNIES DES GLACES ET VERRES SPECIAUX DU NORD DE LA FRANCE. Sept. 23, 1953 [Oct. 16, 1952], No. 26198/53. Class 56. Glass, particularly in the form of sheets or of hollow bodies, is rapidly cooled in a chamber of which the cooled walls are selectively absorbent and return to the glass a radiation of which the intensity is less than that of the radiation received and has a composition different from that of the radiation received. In the form shown the cooling chamber has water-cooled walls 1.which, on the sides 4 facing the glass F, are of high reflecting power for infra-red rays, and superimposed on this surface, nearer the glass, is a layer 5 of small thickness having a selectively absorbent effect on the infra-red rays received, e.g. it absorbs those of a wavelength above 3 microns. The reflecting surface may be anodically oxidized polished aluminium; the absorbent layer may be a varnish in which powdered glass, containing infra-red-absorbing constituents, e.g. oxides of iron, cobalt, nickel or copper, is incorporated. The effect of this cooling is to create in the temperature zone including the critical annealing zone a slight temperature gradient throughout the glass which is less than that obtained by cooling the glass by radiation on to the walls of a totally absorbing black chamber surrounding the glass. Specification 724,326 is referred to.
