Abstract

<PICT:1035906/C1/1> In the toughening of glass articles other than sheet glass, wherein the heated article is subjected to rapid chilling by streams of chilling medium directed over the surfaces to give a relative temperature difference between the surfaces and the interior, the cooling of the interior relative to the surfaces is controlled by directing on to the article radiations of wave-length to which the glass is partially transparent and in the absence of radiations of wave-length to which the glass is opaque, to give a modified stress distribution in that the cooling of the interior is retarded. A glass tumbler 1 supported on a platform 2 is rotated between nozzles 4, 7 on arms 3, 5 and 6 supplied with chilling air. The tumbler 1 is surrounded by lamps 12 arranged to emit radiations including to region 2.75-4.5 microns. Alternatively, the tumbler 1 may be surrounded by walls carrying an inner surface coating of zirconium silicate or calcium silicate which absorb radiation greater than 5 microns and reflect the required radiations, or by an outer surface layer of gold.
