729,410. External shoe-drum brakes. KLOSE, H. Oct. 19, 1953 [Nov. 3, 1952], No. 28857/53. Class 103 (1). In an external shoe-drum brake, the brake shoes 2, 2a are moved into engagement with the drum 1 by radial displacement in straight guideways as a result of operation of the toggle linkage 4, 5, 6. As shown in Fig. 1, an actuating electric motor 9 disposed below the drum rotates eccentric cranks 8, 8a, which lift weights 7, 7a and through the links 4 and 5 cause the shoes to be pressed towards or away from the drum within guides 3. In the brake shown in Fig. 4, the motor 13 operates the toggle mechanism through helical screw bolts 12 and bell cranks 10.
