Abstract

728,878. Controlling change-speed gearing. FULLER MANUFACTURING CO. July 27, 1953, No. 20790/53. Class 80 (2). The manually-controlled three-reduced, direct drive, overdrive and reverse change-speed gear 10 in series with a power-operated reduced and direct drive auxiliary gear 11 described in Specification 681,759, is provided with electrically controlled pressure-fluid means for changing the ratio in the auxiliary gear; these means comprising a switch 134 operated by a handle on the main change-speed gear lever 22, and a switch 136, closed only when the lever 22 is in the neutral position, in the circuit of a solenoidoperated two-position valve 102 supplying the pressure fluid (which may be compressed air, vacuum or liquid) to a two-position piston in a cylinder 101 connected to a striker fork actuating the friction synchromesh and change speed means in the auxiliary gear 11. The switch 136 is closed by the usual drift pins 121 and interlocking balls 122 between the shift rails 114-117 of the main change-speed gear. The change in ratio of the auxiliary gear 11 is greater than the change in ratio between the lowest and overdrive ratios of the main gear 10, numerical ratios being specified. The combined gear, giving ten forward ratios in all, is operated over the five lowest ratios by setting the auxiliary gear to give reduced drive and changing the ratios in the main gear 10 from lowest reduced speed to overdrive. To change from fifth to sixth speed, the operator preselects direct drive in the auxiliary gear 11 by setting the switch 134, direct drive being obtained automatically as soon as the main gear lever 22 is moved to the neutral position to close the switch 136, move the valve 102 to its other position, and thus supply pressure fluid to the opposite end of the cylinder 101. The change is completed by re-engaging the lowest reduced ratio in the main gear 10.
