Abstract

791,008. Change-speed control. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D. Sept. 24, 1956 [June 22, 1955], No. 18010/55. Class 80 (2). A change-speed gear selector rod a, moved axially one way or the other to a gear engaged position and having an intermediate neutral position, is formed with an enlarged portion b and carries slidably a collar e, the various parts lying in different diameter cylinders c, f, g to which hydraulic or pneumatic pressure fluid is supplied through conduits h, j, k. The end area of the collar e subjected to pressure in the bore f is greater than the end area of the enlargement b subjected to pressure in the bore c. When pressure fluid is applied simultaneously through the conduits j, h to the bores f, c, the collar e is moved to its extreme right-hand position in the Figure and simultaneously the rod a and enlargement b are moved leftwards until the enlargement engages the collar. Thus a positively located intermediate neutral position of the selector rod a is obtained. Leftwards or rightwards movement of the selector rod to establish a selected ratio is obtained by admitting pressure fluid through one only of the conduits h, k to the bores c, g. One or more selector rods according to the invention may be applied to a change-speed gear having the selection and establishment of the different ratios controlled by a gear shift lever arranged to make an are or a complete circle of step-by-step movements. In a change-speed gear having more than one selector rod, suitable interlocking means are provided to prevent two gear ratios being simultaneously engaged.
