728,474. Supply systems for consumption apparatus; rectifying. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. Feb. 9, 1953 [Feb. 18, 1952], No. 3563/53. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). An electrostatic precipitator power supply system of the type having the precipitator electrodes, not shown, supplied through a rectifier 23 from a high output voltage transformer 22 is provided with saturable reactors L1, L2 having their A.C. windings 26, 25 respectively connected in series and in parallel with the transformer primary winding and their magnetizing windings supplied with separate but variable magnetizing currents, means being arranged to cyclically control variations of the latter in synchronism with rotation of the precipitator rotor or of its electrode cleaning apparatus whereby to energize the two reactors in oppositely phased relationship so that they combine to reduce the electrode voltage during cleaning periods. The magnetizing currents are supplied through rectifiers 31, 32 from variable inductors 33, 34 connected across an auxiliary A.C. supply 30 and whose wipers 35, 36 contact their turns, said wipers being moved by e.g. screw and spur gearing 37, 38 such that, e.g., as one supplies increasing voltage the other supplies decreasing voltage to their respective reactors. There is a separate system for each electrode bank.
