Abstract

728,396. Closing filled bags. STAFFORD, C. Nov. 11, 1952 [Feb. 29, 1952], No. 5408/52. Class 94 (1)., Apparatus for sealing bags includes an endless conveyer 10 comprising two parallel chains passing over sprocket wheels 13, 14 driven by an electric motor 56 through belt coupled pulleys, and transverse brackets 17 between the chains each carry a container 18 in which the partly filled bags are placed. Each container has two bars 71 pivoted to its sides and urged apart and against stops 84 by a spring 83. As each bag approaches the sealing position the lower ends of the bars engage cam tracks 75 which urge the upper ends of the bars together below the bag mouth. The sealing means is mounted on a fixed bracket 30 and includes a plate 32 with two pairs of arms 33, 34 between which is carried a rectangular block 35 and below which is carried a rectangular plate 42. Two sealing rollers 50, 51 beneath the plate 42 are mounted on shafts 52, 53 respectively, and the shaft 52 is driven via belts &c. from the electric motor. The shaft 53 is supported in a bar 43 pivoted at one end to the arms 33, and the other end of the bar slides between arms 34 and is adjustably held by a rod 46 screwed into the block 35. The sealing rollers are knurled and the roller 50 has a rib 39 engaging a groove 49 in the roller 51. Mounted on each roller shaft above the plate 42 is a collar 61 heated by gas jets 62, 63. Converging guides 64 close each bag mouth prior to its reception between the rollers. The bags may be sealed without heating, and if the bag is not of thermoplastic material the inner surfaces thereof may be coated with a thermoplastic cement. Instead of two sealing rollers, one roller co-operating with a flat plate may be used.
