Abstract
728,196. Locking nuts. RENSWOUDE, L. T. B. VAN. July 10, 1953 [July 19, 1952], No. 19204/53. Class 89(1). A locking washer 1, Fig. 4, comprises an annulus of deformable material, e.g. a synthetic resin sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Akulon ", that is thicker in the axial direction at its inner and outer peripheries than midway therebetween- The cross-section of the material between the inner and outer peripheries is symmetrical both about a line 5 passing through the centre of the material and perpendicular to the washer axis 6a, and about a line 6 parallel with the axis and lying midway between the inner and outer peripheries. When the washer is deformed by a nut 2, Fig. 2, the inner thickened periphery is squeezed against the threads of screw 7 to seal the joint, and the outer periphery is squeezed out as shown to engage the flat sides of the nut to lock it. The material of the washer is said to return partly to its initial state after deformation whereby the outer periphery grips the corners of the nut. Corrugated metal reinforcement, glass wool, asbestos or like fibrous material may be incorporated in the material of the washer.
