Abstract

An adhesive emulsion convertible to an adhesive gel of inhibited ability to flow at high temperature comprises a hot water-in-oil emulsion formed at a temperature not exceeding 212 DEG F. having, as its disperse phase, an aqueous latex containing an organic elastomeric substance selected from the group consisting of natural rubber and synthetic rubbery polymers non-fluid at the temperature of the hot emulsion and, as its continuous phase, an organic tackifier for the elastomeric substance. The organic tackifier may be a resinous extract of a heavy aromatic base petroleum oil or a coumarone-indene resin or a blend thereof and may be heated prior to admixture with the latex to a temperature sufficient to produce upon admixture with the latex a hot emulsion at a temperature between 180 DEG and 212 DEG F. The synthetic rubber may be polybutadiene, a butadiene-styrene copolymer or butyl rubber, and the proportions of resin to elastomer may be in the ratio of 1 to 10 parts of resin to 1 of elastomer solids. The adhesive may contain fillers such as slate dust and calcium carbonate and other additives such as wax, sulphur, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, borax, ammonium chloride, flour, starch, casein, lignin, carboxymethyl cellulose, and resins such as dimethylol urea, phenol-formaldehyde, ester gums and modified resin. Fibres such as unspun sisal may be embedded in the adhesive.ALSO:An adhesive emulsion convertible to an adhesive gel of inhibited ability to flow at high temperature comprises a hot water-in-oil emulsion formed at a temperature not exceeding 212 DEG F., having, as its disperse phase, an aqueous latex containing natural rubber and, as its continuous phase, an organic tackifier for the rubber.
