Abstract

727,794. Friction clutches. SOC. PER AZIONI ODERO-TERNI-ORLANDO PER LA CONSTRUZIONE DI NAVI MACCHINE ED ARTIGLIERIE. July 7, 1950 [July 22, 1949], No. 17010/50. Class 80 (2) [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXIV]. In a vehicle driving system a shaft 1 for each track or wheel forms part of the driving mechanism and carries a part 2 of a clutch unit, the other part 4 of which is carried by a driven shaft 7 connected by gearing 8, 9 to a driving wheel shaft 10, and mounted loosely on the shaft 7 is a brake drum C carrying rollers 13, which cooperate with inclined surfaces 17 on a member 14 splined to the shaft 7 and connected by a spring 6 to the clutch part 4, relative rotational movement between the drum C and shaft 7 varying the pressure of the spring 6 on the clutch parts. As shown the member 14 is connected by bolts 15 to a member 16 of the clutch unit so that with the drum C rotating with the shaft 7 clutch plates 3, 5 are spring-urged into engagement. Application of a brake-band 12 to the drum C causes relative rotation between the drum C and shaft 7 and due to the co-operating rollers 13 and surfaces 17 the member 4 moves axially on the shaft 7 to disengage the clutch and brake the shaft 7. The invention is applied to steering a vehicle by selection operation of the brakes. The brakes can be applied to varying degrees to achieve turns of different radii.
