Abstract

726,992. Heating vehicles. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. March 26, 1953 [July 24, 1952], No. 8387/53. Class 64 (2). In a heating system, a four-way valve 4 has an inlet 7 from the water cooling-jacket of an engine 1, an outlet 5 to a heater 3 in which the water is heated by exhaust gas, an inlet 6 from this heater and an outlet 8 by which hot water is led to a heater 2, e.g. which heats air in the interior of a vehicle powered by the engine 1, a conduit 9 returning water from the air heater 2 to the engine water jacket. A pump 10 circulates the water in the system. When starting the engine in cold weather, the valve core 12 is in the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the coolant is heated by the exhaust and warms both the heater 2 in the vehicle and the engine. As the water gets warmer, the valve core 12 is moved, Fig. 3, so that the exhaust heater 3 is by-passed out of the coolant circuit, any steam produced in the exhaust heater being led to the engine cooling radiator 16 by a small pipe 15 for condensation. The core 12 of the valve 4 is manually operated or operated by a thermal element in one of the conduits 7 or 9.
