An appliance for igniting coal and other solid fuel fires comprises a heat resisting grid which supports series connected heating elements 6 contained in refractory tubes 5, spaces 7, 29 at the ends of the grid being plugged with a refractory material applied as a plastic mass. A hollow block 10 has a handle 9 and a protecting plate 30 attached to it. The grid is detachable for renewal or repair after removal from a socket 11 and release of leads 26.
