In a modification of the firelighter claimed in the parent Specification the top plate 5, Fig 3, is made without any holes in its upper face. There may be holes 9 provided in one end, and/or holes may be made in flange 7 and heater casing side wall 1. Furthermore the heating element may comprise a coil of wire held inside a refractory tube, or the heating coil may pass through holes in a rectangular block of refractory material. The block may be in the form of two parts with grooved faces which in juxtaposition form the heating cable housing 11.
