Abstract
The process claimed in the parent Specification is applied to the distillation of zinc in blast furnaces in which the furnace gases accumulate in and are withdrawn from the top of the furnace above the charge level, the oxygen-containing gas being introduced into this space. At least a part of the oxygen-containing gas may be introduced below the charge level but above the active smelting zone of the furnace, and a small proportion may be introduced through a pipe into the furnace charging device, e.g. into the charge-holding space between two charging bells. In a further modification the process may be employed in smelting operation in furnaces other than blast furnaces where the gaseous smelting products contain at least 1.5 per cent of carbon dioxide and where at least 80 per cent of the zinc vapour is condensed to metallic zinc, e.g. in electro-thermic smelting processes. Specifications 572,961 and 686,542 also are referred to.
