Abstract

725,130. Distillation &c. columns. RIETMANN, M. O. KUHNI-, and KUHNI, F. H. Nov. 24, 1953 [Nov. 26, 1952; Feb. 26, 1953], No. 32566/53. Class 55 (2). Distillation &c. columns, gas washing towers &c. with superposed compartments formed by spaced perforated plates 2, 2a, carrying liquid to the level of downcomers 5, 4a, have sealing means for the plate peripheries in the form of metal rings 6, 6a, shown as of inverted F-section which bear elastically against the column wall and furnishing a narrower gas passage through the slot accommodating the plate than the individual plate openings 3. The ring is pressed against the column wall -by means of a turnbuckle comprising a screw spindle having nuts which bear against lugs 11 welded to the opposed ends of the ring which have co-operating extensions and recesses so as to narrow the gap and increase the resistance to gas flow. In a modification for smaller columns a tightly wound coil spring is pressed from above into the space between the wall and a suitably curved downwardly directed peripheral flange of the plate. The plates are each preferably supported on the underlying plate by feet depending from their underside. The spring may be replaced by a flanged ring having radial slits or the plate edge itself may be flanged and slit.
