A column for contacting a gas with a liquid or two immiscible liquids of different densities comprises a fixed perforated plate 1 and a floating perforated plate 4, the perforations of the two plates being off-set relatively to each other and channel-section members 7 limiting the upward movement of the plate 4. The perforations of the fixed plate may be triangular, square, rectangular, circular or oval and in the rest position of the floating plate the. perforations of the fixed plates are covered by imperforated portions of the floating plate. The channel-section members 7 may be arranged so that the denser phase follows a tortuous path on the plate. The travel-limiting members 7 may be replaced by studs.
