Abstract
1,183,833. Gas and liquid chromatography. V. PRETORIUS and H. H. HAHN. 9 Aug., 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 36538/67. Addition to 1148661. Headings B1L and B1X. A gas or liquid chromatographic separating process is carried out in a tubular column in which movement of the retarding phase is stationary or restrained and the relative overall flow velocity between the phases is adjusted to a value in excess of the velocity corresponding to the onset in the forwarding phase of convective flow phenomena apparent by a point of downward inflection in a graphical representation of plate height against the said relative overall velocity, and the chromatographic separation is carried out at this adjusted velocity. In Fig 1, the ordinate h is proportional to the plate height, the abscissa Re is proportional to the relative overall velocity, and the point of downward inflection is at c. The separation may be carried out at or beyond a relative overall velocity corresponding to point d. Columns described may be of copper internally covered with whiskers or fur formed by oxidation with sodium chlorite in the presence of cyanide ion and strong alkali (Fig. 2); have an internal spiral groove for countercurrent chromatography (Fig. 6); have inclined perforated plates (Fig. 8); comprise bonded beads coated with retarding phase (Fig. 11) or Raschig rings (Fig. 12).
