Class 40 (2) A centre post for an automatic gramophone has a retractable pawl 6 which unseats the lowermost record and is movable axially by an amount corresponding to the thickness of a record to lower the remainder of the stack on to a bearing surface 4 on the centre post, and another pawl 25 acting diametrically opposite to the other pawl 6 and forming a second bearing surface, whereby the records are prevented from tilting. The pawls 6, 25 are movable about a fixed pin 7 in the centre post, the pawl 6 being provided with an elongated hole 11 to permit limited axial movement. The pawl 6 is normally held in its uppermost position by a spring-loaded plunger 19 acting on a ramp 20 on the pawl 6. During a record changing operation, an inner shaft 12 carrying the plunger 19 and a pin 14 is moved upwardly to move the pawls 6 and 25 to the left, as viewed in Fig. 2, to unseat the lowermost record a. The weight of the remaining records press the pawl 6 downwardly against the spring-loaded plunger 19, following which the pawls 6 and 25 are immediately moved back to the initial position shown in Fig. 2 so that pawl 25 also supports the records at a point diametrically opposite to the surface 4.
