Abstract
541,429. Gramophones. HANSON, T. A. July 11, 1940, No. 11531. [Class 40 (ii)] In a gramophone having a pick-up or sound-box in which the needle holder 1 is open top and bottom and the needle 4 is held therein by a spring plunger 5, means comprising a drum magazine 13, a spring controlled plunger 9, and a needle clamp 5 are provided for automatically replacing a used needle by a fresh one when the pick-up is swung out against a stop device 27. The fresh needles are held in grooves round the periphery of the drum 13, which is adapted to be moved one step by a ratchet device 20 when this abuts a stop 26, whereby a fresh needle is presented above the hollow passage in the needle holder 1. The needles are held in position in the grooves of the drum by a paper wrapping 16 round the drum and by paper end discs. The outward movement of the pick-up against the stop device also causes a lever 6 on the pick-up to be engaged and deflected by a ramp and on the stop device, whereby the needle gripper 5 is released and allows the used needle to drop out. A fresh needle is then transferred from the magazine to the pick-up by the depression of the plunger 9 normally held in retracted position by a spring 12.
