Abstract
724,560. Gearing for stopping and starting machinery; controlling reverse gearing. ROAD MACHINES (DRAYTON), Ltd., and ROBB, W. M. Feb. 28, 1953, No. 5666/53. Class 80 (2) [Also in Groups XXX, XXXI and XXXIV]. In a power driven vehicle for use upon a monorail system, a gear box comprises in combination a positively driven clutch drum 17, a forward drive clutch disc 25 on one side of the drum and 'a reverse drive clutch disc 22 on the other, manually operable means such as a handle 36 &c. for moving the drum axially into driving engagement with either of the clutch discs, the drum being biased towards its neutral position, spring loaded catch mechanism such as a lever 50 and detent 46, 49 for retaining the drum in driving engagement with either of the discs and means, such as a shoe 55, operable by a 'stop (not shown) adjustably positioned on the rail for releasing the catch mechanism. The disc 22 is connected to a sprocket 23 which, through a chain 29 Fig. 5, passing over an idle sprocket 30, rotates a sprocket 27 on a driven shaft 28 in the reverse direction, and the disc 25 is connected to a sprocket 26 rotating the driven shaft forwardly through a chain 34 and sprocket 33; the drum 17 on a shaft 18 is driven through multiple belts 16 and a shaft 14 rotated by the motor on the vehicle, and the gear box driven shaft 28 is drivingly connected to a bogie rail-wheel by a chain 10 &c. The lever 36 is mounted on a spindle 37 passing through the box, and carries an arm 38 and rod 39, the latter passing through a hole in and carrying springs 42 abutting a double-armed rocker member 40 so that movement of the lever rocks the rocker member, which is connected to the shaft 18 for corresponding axial movement of the latter to engage either the forward or reverse drive clutch; the lever 36, clutch drum 17 &c. are biased to the neutral position by springs 44. The spindle 37 carries at its far end a catch plate 46, either side 47, 48 of which is engageable by a projection 49 on a hand-lever 50 pivoted at 51 and urged to the left of Fig. 5 by a spring 52 to retain either the forward or reverse gear in engagement, the other end of the hand-lever being connected by a rod 54 to the shoe 55, the projection 49 being disengaged from the catch plate when the shoe contacts the stop on the monorail and the engaged clutch accordingly disengaged. The shaft 37 also carries a cam 57 which bears against the free end of a brake shoe 58 pivoted at 59 to the gear box and urged by a spring 60 into engagement with a brake drum 61 on one end of the driven shaft 28, the arrangement being such that when the lever 36 is in either the forward or reverse position the brake is disengaged, but the brake is applied when the lever is in the neutral position. The drive clutches can be disengaged manually at any time by operation of the lever 50. Specifications 720,680, [Group XXX], and 720,681, [Group XXXII], are referred to.
