Abstract
724,084. Quenching apparatus. GIBBONS BROS., Ltd., MARLE, M. VAN, and WEBB, A. W. OGILVY-. July 18, 1952 [April 20, 1951], No. 9238/51. Class 72. A method of quenching hollow elongated articles having one end closed comprises advancing the heated articles open end foremost on to a member immersed in a large volume of a cooling liquid and having orifices for the discharge of cooling liquid against the interior surface of the articles so that both interior and exterior surfaces are quenched simultaneously. As shown, the articles 13, e.g. shell bodies, are advanced through a heating furnace 12 and delivered to a feeding device 19 which directs the articles on to a member 25 (Fig. 3) having a plurality of orifices 33 for discharging cooling liquid against the interior surface of the article, and which is mounted on a rotatable framework supported in a tank 20 filled with quenching medium. The framework may be given a step-by-step rotary motion and at the same time the article is rotated about the member 25. The articles are removed from the tank by a discharging apparatus, e.g. a magnet 41. The article 13 may rest on a boss 30 on a gear wheel 29, the member 25 being urged into contact with the closed end by a spring 27 (Fig. 3). The gear 29 may mesh with a similar adjacent gear, all such gears being operated by a bevel gear 38 which may be driven during the rotation of the framework only or may be operated continuously. Perforated pipes 34 and a perforated ring 35 may discharge jets of cooling liquid against the outer surface of the article.
