Abstract

The surface treatment of articles or work pieces such as pickling, applying a protective coat e.g. paint by dipping, or galvanizing, is effected by charging treatment material through an orifice into the lower of two compartments formed internally of the container by a transverse perforated partition, charging the articles into the upper compartment, turning the container about its axis to allow the <PICT:0769553/III/1> material to flow into the work compartment into contact with the articles, locating the container at the conclusion of the treatment in a position where the partition is wholly above the treatment material, and, after a period sufficient to allow the surplus material to flow back to the lower compartment, removing the articles from the container. As shown, the compartments are formed by a partition 9 in a drum 1 mounted on trunnions 5. The partition is secured to the parallel ends 7, 8 of the drum to leave a space 11 at each end of the partition. The orifice is arranged at 6. The container may be continually or intermittently rotated during the operation. A modified container (not shown) is disclosed with frusto conical end walls, one of which has the charging orifice, the other being secured to tipping trunnions. The containers may be provided with heating means e.g. be rotated in a bath of molten lead.
